Overview of XTB and Market Access

Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Warsaw, Poland, XTB S.A. is a regulated broker providing access to a broad range of financial instruments. Its offering includes physical stocks and ETFs, alongside CFDs and cryptocurrencies. The platform connects investors to several major international stock exchanges, including Euronext (Paris and Amsterdam), XETRA (Frankfurt), Borsa Italiana, Bolsa de Madrid, the London Stock Exchange, and American markets such as the Nasdaq and NYSE Arca.

XTB supports modern investment features such as fractional shares and programmed savings plans, allowing for gradual portfolio building.

Regulatory Framework and Account Types

XTB operates under the supervision of several European financial authorities, including the KNF in Poland, CySEC in Cyprus, and the FCA in the United Kingdom. It accepts clients from various countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

In terms of account structures, the broker provides two main options:

  • Securities Account: A standard account for trading various global assets.
  • PEA (Plan d’Épargne en Actions): A specific tax-advantaged account available for eligible residents.

There is no minimum deposit required to open an account.

Fee Structure: Commissions and Custody

The broker utilizes a volume-based pricing model for stocks and ETFs.

Order and Custody Fees

XTB does not charge any custody fees for holding assets on the platform. For transaction commissions, a 0% fee applies to both European and American ETFs and stocks, provided the investor’s total monthly turnover does not exceed €100,000. If this monthly limit is surpassed, a commission of 0.20% is applied to subsequent orders, with a minimum fee of €10 per trade.

Currency Exchange Fees

While commission fees are often zero, investors must account for currency conversion. XTB applies a currency exchange fee of 0.500% whenever an asset is purchased or sold in a currency different from the account's base currency.

Practical Impact on EUR vs. USD Transactions

The total cost of an investment varies depending on the listing currency of the product:

  • Buying a product quoted in Euros: For an investor with a Euro-denominated account, purchasing an ETF on Euronext Paris or XETRA results in zero transaction costs, provided the €100,000 monthly volume limit is respected. Since no currency conversion is required, the 0.500% exchange fee does not apply.
  • Buying a product quoted in Dollars: When purchasing a stock or ETF on the Nasdaq or NYSE, the 0% commission still applies (within the volume limit). However, the investor will incur the 0.500% exchange fee at the time of purchase and again upon the sale of the asset.

Investor Profile

Who it suits: XTB is positioned for investors seeking access to European and American markets with low overhead, particularly those who stay within the €100,000 monthly trading limit. The availability of fractional shares and the lack of a minimum deposit make it accessible for those starting with smaller amounts.

Who it may not suit: This platform may be less cost-effective for high-volume traders who regularly exceed the €100,000 monthly threshold, as the 0.20% commission (minimum €10) then applies. Additionally, investors focusing solely on foreign-denominated assets should consider the impact of the 0.500% exchange fee on their total returns.
